How many times have you or someone you know started a new fitness routine only to die out after 2 weeks...2 months....2 years?
It happens., Heck over the course of my life I have had months where it got away from me. I tell people that I have been working out since I was 13...which is true...to an extent.
I have had months where I didn't do a damn thing for my health, I binge drank, I ate fast food daily, I have even had era's in my life where I barely ate 1 meal day....
I've been that 115 lb ADULT MALE....
I've been that "I don't care that this crunchwrap supreme is bad for me...It's too good to not eat" guy.....
Heck, I have even been that guy that walked in to a gym and said "that machine looks cool...I'll do that today"
People OFTEN will tell me "That is EASY for you to do though, you live at a gym..."
What they don't realize is that my desire in life has a lot less to do with myself than it does with the people I help daily.
Access doesn't make it easier, Everybody has the access to ordering a salad instead of a 1/2 lb burger with onion rings and BBQ sauce.... Everyone has the option to park in a spot furthest from the store....Everyone has the option to exercise...even if they are stuck at home...
Ever hear of a push up?...or a crunch?... what about a squat?...these movements require no equipment, and paired together...guess what, you have yourself a "full body work out"
TODAY, I wanted to write this blog to GIVE you 10 HABITS, that will make being healthy a simple part of your lifestyle...because honestly, I have been where you have, and I know damn well I am not the most dedicated to my own fitness..but luckily, I know some habits that make it A WHOLE LOT easier to develop a healthier lifestyle, and STAY on it.
Without further ado,
10 SIMPLE HABITS TO MAKE BEING HEALTHY NATURAL
- PARK IN THE FURTHEST PARKING SPOT WHEREVER YOU GO
This may sound simple, and I know you have heard it before...but that doesn't change the fact that you get tempted to take a handicap parking spot because of its proximity to your favorite restaurant...Increase you daily energy output by increasing steps, no matter how small the action, it will add up to a big difference.
- INCORPORATE EXERCISES RANDOMLY INTO YOUR DAY TO DAY ACTIVITIES
One thing that I do EVERYDAY is coach..when I coach, I demonstrate exercises....Now I never do the set with the student..but I will do 1-2 reps of every exercise for every pratice that I am coaching......THIS ADDS UP TOO...Now I know you aren't a coach but you can do this too! When you walk down your hall way at home, do some high knees!....When you are cooking, don't just hunch over to pick up a pan, do a few SQUATS, When you are watching TV sit on the ground and do some stretches instead of slumped over on the couch.
- GET A TEAM THAT YOU CAN WORKOUT WITH
Study's show that if you work out with a group of people than you will stick with it much longer. This is by far the number 1 reason I have a career, people don't train with me because i am an awesome person...I'm actually quite boring (you can ask my wife). The students at my dojo train there more so because there are LIKE MINDED people that want to be healthier too...A community is the most important aspect of your lifestyle, make sure yours is TOP NOTCH.
- DRINK WATER RIGHT WHEN YOU WAKE UP
This is a Biggie! When you sleep, you go through a long period of not consuming anything, this can lead to dehydration, and that "hunger" feeling. When you drink water right when you wake up, you are doing 3 MAJOR things.
1. You are starting your day on a good habit, studies show that your success is directly related to the habits...add more good habits, and you will be more successful.
2. You are going to replenish your body so that you can be more alert, feel less fatigued, and increase your body's functionality.
. You will be able to cut back the need to over-eat in the morning
- WHEN EATING OUT, THINK PORTION CONTROL!
There are 2 major reasons eating out isn't typically good for you: 1- the food is typically lower in quality and 2- the portions are OUT OF CONTROL! Cut your meal in half and guess what...YOU ALSO CUT THE CALORIES N HALF....so a 1200 calorie meal turns into 600.... Calories aren't everything but I guarantee you taking in 1200 calories a meal is not going to help you gain control of your health.
- PLAY WITH YOUR KIDS...PHYSICALLY
You may not realize it, but while you may have habits of watching TV or playing video games, your kids actually WANT and NEED to move...Play with them, Freeze tag, catch, go swimming, race them, play a sport with them, hop like a bunny if they ask you too....If they are older, take them to play golf, tennis, laser tag, paintball etc....LITERALLY just be PRESENT! This won't only make you healthier physically but emotionally and it was strengthen your bond with your kids as well!
- PICK UP SOME HOBBIES
Golf, Tennis, Paintball, Hiking, Paddle boarding, ATV's, Horse Shoes, 4 Square...I don't care what the hobby, but choose to DO SOMETHING, that couch really isn't as fun or cool as you feel it is. I guarantee you that the last time you did something physical you told yourself "I should do this more!" only to never do it again...start getting active in your activity!
- COOK FROM RECIPES, NOT HABITS
Everyone say's cooking healthy is "too hard"...yet you can go on pinterest or google and find A MILLION recipes in a matter of seconds....You have habits of cooking mac n' cheese, or ordering pizza....its not much easier, it is just a habit! Get recipes and get "eat this not that" tips.... Make your day to day life easier and tastier!
- WRITE A LIST AND DON'T SHOP ON AN EMPTY STOMACH
Ever experience the moment you walk in the store after skipping lunch and you have to hurry home to make dinner so you decide to stop at the deli section and just get a bunch of fried chicken to take home because you are hungry, don't have a plan, and you "just want to get home..." If you go after dinner, or after lunch you are less likely to buy crap. If you go with a list, you can AVOID aisles with the not so good goodies on it!
- HIRE A COACH
Yes and No this is a plug to my career, Do I want you to sign up with me...OF COURSE, does that mean it would hurt my feelings if you didn't? No! Simply put MOST PEOPLE CAN NOT DO ANYTHING ON THEIR OWN. When you get life insurance, you don't write up the plan yourself....When you need need to have an operation, you don't ye'll to your spouse to go grab the scalpel....Why would you think you could do fitness on your own....It isn't as "easy" as most people may think it is...if it was easy, everyone would be fit! A coach will help ensure that you do your exercises correctly, can regress or progress you as needed, will be able to help you change habits,, and will be able to keep you motivated!
The key to your health is NOT the 4 hours per week you dedicate to working out, it needs to be the 164 hours that you do not! I have had people work out 4 days a week with me, and then all other time was spent playing video games and eating junk....did they get results?? HELL NO. Yet the person that comes 3-4 times per week and works on their habits as I instruct them to, THEY SEE MAJOR RESULTS....Develop the habits, and I GUARANTEE that it wont only become NATURAL for you to be healthy, but it will become ENJOYABLE too.
